(Directoire)
   The Directory (Directoire) was the government that functioned during the revolution of 1789 from 5 Brumaire Year IV (October 27, 1795) to 18 Brumaire Year VIII (November 9, 1799), when it was overthrown by Napoléon Bonaparte (see napoléon i). The Directory governed with the help of two chambers: the Council of Elders (Conseil des Anciens), and the Council of Five Hundred (Conseil des Cinq-Cents). The Directory, a regime instituted by the Constitution of the Year III, was a bourgeois republic. In foreign affairs, it practiced a policy of conquering territories and establishing sister republics, made war on the Holy Roman Empire (campaign in Italy) and on Britain (campaign in Egypt), and provoked the formation of the Second Coalition against France. In terms of domestic policy, the Directory regime, quite dissolute, was marked by attempted coup d'états and a terrible financial crisis. Leading members of the Directory government included paul barras, Abbé Emmanuel sieyès, and lazare carnot.
